Socio-medical Study on Korean A Bomb Survivors


Abstract
The author has made an analysis of the data obtained from Korean survivors of the atomic blast in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Data were obtained from 270 survivors who are now living in Korea and have registered at the Korean Atomic Bomb Casualty Relief Association as of August 31, 1968.
From this study, the following conclusions were obtained:
1. The reasons or purposes for being in Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the time of bombing were shown as follows; 47.8% were already living in Japan as residents, 42.2% were drafted for the labor force, 3.7% were student soldiers, and 2.6/ were studying abroad, and 3.7% gave no response.
2. The two cities named Hirosgima and Nagasaki were bombed; 75.9% of the victims were produced in Hiroshima and 15.6% in Nagasaki.
3. Out of the total survivors, 47. 0% were bombed indoors, 48. 5% outdoors and 4. 5% were unknown. Among the survivors who were bombed outdoors 53. 5% were observed to be campletely exposed to atomic radiation hazard.
4. Out of those surveyed 88.9% had been well and had not been suffered from medical problems prior to the bombings. However, various acute symtoms ccured among 68. 2% immediately after the bombings and getting worse since then.
5. Among the 56 patients who had surgical operation in Japan, 46.4% had relapses, while mong the 37 patients who had operation in Korea, 27. 0% had relapses.
6. Prior to the bombings, out of 96 pregnancy cases, normal delivery occupied 82.3%, natural abortion 9.3%, still-birth 8.4% and 30 premature case were observed; while after the bombing, out of 166 cases, those were 64. 0%, 15. 1%, 10. 6%, respectively and premature cases occupied 10.4¡Æ0. Among normal delivery cases after the bombings, normal physical developments were observed with 57.1%, abnormal with 2.9¡Æo and deaths with 20%, and among premature cases normal physical developments with 5.3%, abnormal with 84.2% and deaths with 10.5¡Æ0.
7. Among the families at the bombings, 14.5% were Killed, 31.7% injured and 53.8% without any casualties; among the present families who had been well at that time of bombings, 20.1% became ill - since then and 30. 2 % have been recovered.
8. Hypertension and neural symtoms were most prevalent and dermal, stomach, intestinal symtoms, malformation came next in order in the patients among the persons who were bombed and their families.
